On November 18, 2017, the WLA hosted the book launch for Politics of the Pantry: Housewives, Food, and Consumer Protest in Twentieth Century America by Emily E. LB. Twarog. Politics of the Pantry examines the rise and fall of the American housewife as a political constituency group. Shifting the focus away from the workplace as a site of protest, it looks to the homefront as a starting point for protest in the public sphere. The event at Piper Hall included a panel with Lynne Heidt, Evanston Realtor and former leader of the National Consumers’ Union; Jackie Kendall, Democracy Partners; Emily E. LB. Twarog, PhD, Author and Assistant Professor, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign; and Bonnie Wilson, Vice Chair of the Frances Willard Historical Association and former Evanston Township Assessor.
