"A Day On, Not a Day Off": Living Our Jesuit Values Through Service
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. once said, "Life's most persistent and urgent question is: What are you doing for others?" At Loyola University Chicago, we answer this call through our commitment to being persons for and with others—a core tenet of our Jesuit mission.
The MLK Day of Service transforms a federal holiday into a day of active citizenship and community engagement. Rather than taking a day off, we choose to make it a "day on" by engaging in meaningful service that reflects both Dr. King's legacy and our Jesuit values:
- Magis (Striving for Excellence): Through service, we strive to do more, to be more, and to create positive change in our communities
- Cura Personalis (Care for the Whole Person): Our service sites offer opportunities to engage with and care for individuals in our community while growing personally through reflection
- People for and with Others: By serving at Misericordia, Chicago Lights, and through the Street Medicine Program, we stand in solidarity with our community partners
- Unity of Heart, Mind, and Soul: Service combined with reflection allows us to connect our actions with our values and deepens our understanding of social justice
Each service site will include guided reflection activities that help participants connect their service experience with these Jesuit values and Dr. King's vision of the "beloved community." This day marks not just a single day of service but an invitation to ongoing engagement with our community partners throughout the year.
Join us in honoring Dr. King's legacy by making January 20-23, 2025, a time of meaningful action and reflection. Together, we can demonstrate that service to others is a one-day commitment and a way of living our Jesuit values every day.
