What is your favorite thing about working at Loyola?
I love the mission of the University and our students. Loyola attracts students who are caring, community oriented, and usually enthusiastic in their interests. They are a joy to be around and work with. I also only live two blocks from campus, so you can't beat the commute!
What is your most memorable achievement as a Loyola employee?
Wow, that's a tough one! In thinking about my time here, there is a lot I am proud of. Being involved in both the day-to-day management and operations of our department as well as long term planning and strategy, I have a unique perspective of helping solve the daily crises that arise and also helping form who we are and what we will become. I feel good every time I can creatively solve a problem or do something better the next time. I tell my students that I have an inner-efficiency expert that always wants to do things in the best way, using the least amount of time and making the greatest impact.
Some of the biggies are being departmental lead on the redevelopment of our spaces in Mundelein Center. That was an almost 10 year project with many achievements along the way. It was such a pleasure to share the opening of our new theatre with Bob Newhart and his family. But really when I look around at our department, I take pleasure in all of the small things I have contributed over time that have assisted in making the educational experience here transformative for both our students and our audiences. I also enjoy almost every conversation I have with alumni, especially those I have worked closely with and see the awesome things they are doing in their lives and am glad to know the small part I played.
What does Loyola's mission mean to you?
Being a person for others, giving a voice to those who do not have one and being of service to our students and my colleagues. Helping inspire all of these young people to action to make the world a better place, and help them understand that their contributions matter.
What motivates you to succeed each and every day?
If you had asked me 18 years ago did I think I would stay at Loyola for almost 20 years, I would have probably said "No way," but like myself, I feel that this institution is a living, breathing organization that continues to strive to do better and provide an excellent education. So much positive change has happened during my tenure. I feel lucky that I truly enjoy my work, am good at it, have new challenges, get to help people, and work with fantastic artists and colleagues in the best city in the country. I am blessed.
Tell us how you show your Rambler pride.
How do I show my Loyola pride? I bring up working here in all sorts of settings, my social circles, at community meetings, I talk to alumni, prospective students, share the mission, how that folds into the curriculum, talk about the good things Loyola is doing in the community, and how I am glad to have been and continue to be a part of it. It is nice to work for a place I believe matters.
Tell us something most people at Loyola would be surprised to know about you.
Although I graduated top of my high school class and had a full-ride to MIT in engineering, I decided to follow my love and pursue a theatre career, I have never regretted my decision. Do what you love, and live a happy life.
