Housing Accommodations and Exemptions
The residential experience is considered an integral part of a student's education at Loyola.
As a Jesuit university, Loyola strives to walk with its students through their educational and emotional growth at college. The university experience is designed to enrich education through community bonding, and communal housing plays a key role in creating a strong foundation for learning and growth. Living on campus provides students with a sense of community and helps to smooth the transition from home life to more independent living. Freshmen and sophomore students who live on campus often have a more integrated, supported experience than those who choose to live independently off campus.

- Take full advantage of campus resources
- Be more involved in campus activities and educational programs
- Complete more credit hours per semester
- Achieve greater academic success
- Complete their studies and attain their degrees
- Be more satisfied with their overall university experience
Requesting an Accommodation
The SAC recognizes that certain disabilities and conditions require specific housing solutions. As such, our office collaborates with the Office of Residential Life to allow students to safely and comfortably live on campus in a way that aligns with university policy and resources.
Students may request exemption from the residency requirement.
Students that are seeking housing accommodations or exemptions are strongly encouraged to contact SAC before the housing deadline. Final decisions regarding housing accommodations or exemptions are made in collaboration with the Office of Residence Life, and will depend on availability. Students may be placed on a waiting list if housing is unavailable.
Exemption Criteria
Exemptions to the residency requirement are limited to four categories:
- Living with Parent(s)/Legal Guardian(s) in the greater Chicago area. This category of exemption is only accepted prior to move-in; we will not accept this reason for release from a previously signed contract.
- Marriage or Civil Union. A certificate proving marriage/union is required.
- Financial Burden which would prevent you from attending Loyola University Chicago if not allowed to live off campus. This does not include the financial burden created by signing an Off-Campus Lease after entering into an agreement with our office or prior to being approved for exemption.
- Medical Disabilities which cannot be accommodated on campus.
- Age 21 or Older before the start of the academic term.
Each of these reasons requires some verification from third parties associated with documentation of the situation. The Request for Release/Exemption from the Housing Agreement must be accompanied by the documentation before a decision about the request can be made.
