Bad News
Curated by Betsy Odom and Rafael E. VeraOct – Nov 2018
Opening reception: Thursday, October 18, 5-7pm
“Bad news:” a phrase that is both direct and foreboding. It precedes information ranging from mundane to tragic, but in the moment after the news is evoked, it elicits a fear of the inevitable. The works in this exhibition challenge and provoke us, whether it be through an apocalyptic vision or sense of dread inspired by our current climate. Some works find the humor in bad news, while others reveal important realities. Artists Maria Gaspar, Jonathan Herrera, Chris Kerr, Nate Mathews, Cheryl Pope, and Krista Wortendyke use photography, printmaking, drawing and sculpture to create works that are unflinching it the face of dark realities. The artists in this exhibition illuminate the uncomfortable beauty in bad news while charging us to question the world around us. Are you ready for bad news?
