Professor Melin
TTh 10:00am / LSC

This course is designed to introduce students to the major actors, processes, problems, and issues in the arena of global politics.  The focus of the course is on both theoretical and empirical knowledge that has accumulated for the academic study of the interactions of international actors.  We will conduct a broad overview of theoretical approaches to understanding IR and examine key issues that characterize contemporary debates.  Lectures will cover issues at both a general theoretical level and with empirical examples and current events.  Students will become familiar with the contending theories and approaches in the study of IR, will come to understand the conceptual bases of rigorous social science, and will assimilate knowledge of historical and current events in the process. This course is an option in the "Societal and Cultural Knowledge" section of the core curriculum.

PLSC 102: International Politics
Professor Marrar
Th 4:15pm / LSC

This course explores dominant perspective on international relations while emphasizing the relationship between the global North and South in an era of "globalization."  It presents students with the analytical tools necessary for understanding the roots of international law, organizations, and conflict.  It pays special attention to how the events of 9/11 have shaped global politics while attempting to give students a safe context in which to lead classroom discussion.  In general, this course will provide an introduction to global politics. First we will examine the origins of the current international system and examine the three levels of analysis that scholars use to explain international politics. Then we will look at the variety of actors that take part in and influence international politics. Although focusing on nation-states as principal actors, we will also look at the many international organizations that are involved in world affairs.  Throughout the semester, we will also discuss and debate prominent issues in international politics.
