PLSC 370: Chicago Internship
Dr. Gitelson / permission required

This program allows students to earn course credit while gaining valuable professional experience as an intern in the Chicago area. Internship possibilities include positions with U.S. Congressmen and Senators, Illinois Legislators, political campaigns, international organizations, policy think-tanks, and city, state, and federal government agencies. Interns earn 3 or 6 credit hours by working in an internship position that is jointly agreed upon by the student and the internship coordinator. The intern is also required to take part in a special internship seminar that will meet four times during the semester and write a paper related to the internship experience. Students need the permission of the internship coordinator in order to register and must submit an application form. You may contact the internship coordinator at (773) 508-3065 or agitels@luc.edu.

PLSC 370: Magis Internship
Dr. Gitelson / permission required

Students in their junior or senior year are invited to participate in the Fall 2007 internship/seminar program jointly sponsored by the Loyola University School of Law, the Department of Political Science, and the Magis Initiative. The class, which is 3 credit-hours in political science, is conducted by the School of Law for undergraduate students. Students also receive one Magis unit credit that can be applied to graduating from Loyola University as a Magis Scholar. The class is limited to no more than 15 students.

The internship/seminar has three components. (1) Every student is placed in a public interest internship offered by the Loyola University's School of Law (for example, the States' Attorney Office or the Public Defender's Office). The internship requires an 8 hour commitment per week at the placement (generally on a single day); (2) students are required to attend a seminar, every other Thursday, 3:00-4:30, at the School of Law (Water Tower Campus). Loyola University Law School professors and local judges will give presentations on the law and issues related to the internship program; (3) the grade for the course is based on attendance at and participation in the bi-weekly seminars, journal reports on the internship placement, placement supervisor evaluations, and a term paper.

Students must have junior or senior status, an overall 3.0 GPA or higher, and one letter of recommendation from a Loyola faculty member. You do not have to be a political science major or pre-law to participate in the internship/seminar. Permission is required from Dr. Alan R. Gitelson to register for the class.

Because the class is limited to no more than 15 students, students who are interested in getting additional information or applying for the internship are urged to contact Dr. Gitelson as soon as possible by e-mail (agitels@luc.edu) or telephone (773 508-3951 or 3065).
