Successful Student Profile #3

Cheryl

BEFORE LOYOLA

Cheryl went to an all girls’ Catholic high school about 20 miles outside of Cincinnati, OH. She grew up there with her two younger sisters, whom she adores. In her freshman year of high school, Cheryl's mom passed away after battling cancer, and then Cheryl was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease. Cheryl has a great sense of humor, though, and was very involved in sketch comedy: she was a member of a co-ed improv troupe at a local all-male high school. Cheryl was also involved in her high school’s Student Council; she served as President her senior year.

FIRST YEAR AT LUC

Cheryl chose to attend Loyola primarily because of its location in the city of Chicago. She was considering some other schools, but once she took a tour of Loyola’s campus, she was sold! Once on campus and living in Mertz Hall, Cheryl auditioned for one of Loyola’s comedy groups, 45 Kings. They do free shows in Zip’s on campus, and have had performances at Improv Olympics in Chicago, as well. Cheryl works at Comedy Sports, and she is also a member of the Programming Board of USGA. She has made a lot of friends on her floor in Mertz, and by getting really involved on campus. Cheryl is considering a double-major in Communications and International Film & Media Studies. Cheryl earned a cumulative GPA of 3.794 in her first year.

WORDS OF WISDOM

  1. “Mertz is not a good place to study!” Instead, Cheryl goes to study in the library or the new IC (Information Commons) to get away from the distractions of her friends, TV, and internet.
  2. “Meet as many people as you can when you get to campus.” Cheryl attended the organizational fair in the fall, and signed up for as many activities as she could.
  3. “Distribute your work and play time throughout the week.” Weekdays aren’t just for school, and weekends aren’t just for fun! In high school, Cheryl learned how to manage her time well because her school followed a mod system. Her ability to balance her school life and social life has really contributed to her success.
