About

Michelle Hoppes is President of Hoppes Risk Solutions LLC, offering customized consulting services focused on enterprise risk management (ERM), strategy, risk financing and leadership support. She is a Registered Nurse with a Master’s degree in Healthcare Management with an emphasis in Risk Management working in healthcare and insurance for the past 35 years. She is a national leader in ERM for healthcare and insurance industries and she is lead adjunct faculty for Loyola University teaching ERM. Most recently she served as faculty for the American Hospital Association Leadership Summit on ERM in conjunction with ASHRM.

Michelle has served in several executive level positions including most recently as President and Chief Executive Officer at Michigan Professional Insurance Exchange (MPIE), a medical malpractice insurance company and of ERC Risk Solutions, a risk management and patient safety consulting company. Primary responsibilities as CEO included consulting services, ERM, strategic planning, innovation, underwriting, product development, geographic expansion, joint ventures, new company formation, Board relations, culture and talent retention, catastrophic claims management and client satisfaction. Accomplishments during her leadership included restructuring the company for success, company growth by 50%, client satisfaction at 98%, client retention 96%, staff satisfaction at 95%, AM Best upgrade, financial ratios better than the majority of medical malpractice companies, award from RIMS for excellence in ERM, and lastly use of strategic risk management to aid leadership and the Board in decision making and value creation. These efforts led to the acquisition of the company achieving the Board goals and enhancing member value.

She has held other positions in healthcare organizations and insurance companies, performing executive roles in risk management, claims management, and Board officer positions. Michelle’s other leadership positions have included SVP Global Risk Management and Loss Control for a global insurance company, SVP Healthcare Risk Management for a national third-party administrator, SVP for a risk retention group specializing in emergency medicine as well as serving as the founding President for three national consulting companies focused on risk management services.

She has served on Boards and committees of national organizations such as ASHRM, the United States Pharmacopeia, Emergency Patient Safety Foundation and Medical Professional Liability Association (MPLA). She is past President of both the MI and national risk management societies-ASHRM. She is a patient safety fellow and is certified in risk management and quality review as well as achieving the highest healthcare risk management designation as a Distinguished Fellow of the American Society for Healthcare Risk Management and is a recipient of the DSA (distinguished service award) for leadership and contributions to ASHRM and the membership. She has served as chair of the Enterprise Risk Management committee for ASHRM, served as lead faculty for the ERM certificate program and achieved the RIMS national award for best practices in ERM while serving as CEO of MPIE.
