Doctoral Student Wins Top Prize at Regional Three Minute Thesis Finals

Following his first place and Audience Favorite wins at Loyola's Three Minute Thesis (3MT) competition, Brian Choi, a doctoral student in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology, traveled to the regional finals which took place at the Midwestern Association of Graduate Schools (MAGS) Annual Meeting in St. Louis in March. There, Mr. Choi competed against fifty other students from institutions throughout the Midwest in a competition designed to test students' research communication abilities. Brian won the first place prize with his presentation titled, "Discovering New Bacteria Species in Your Urinary Tract". He will now go on to compete in the national 3MT finals in St. Louis in December. This marks the second consecutive year where a Loyola graduate student has nabbed the top spot at the Midwest regional 3MT competition.

Developed by The University of Queensland, 3MT cultivates students’ academic, presentation, and research communication skills. The competition supports their capacity to effectively explain their research in three minutes, in a language appropriate to a non-specialist audience.
