Project Title: (Re)Thinking Back Through Our Mothers: Virginia Woolf, Feminism, and Feminist Scholarship

Project Abstract: Dr. Caughie has invited me to join her in her latest research on Virginia Woolf. In short, we will be examining Woolf's relationship to feminism and feminist scholarship. We will be looking at the kinds of feminist discourse she would have been familiar with as she was writing works like A Room of One's Own and Three Guineas that have been canonized as essential feminist literature. This will entail locating and analyzing the kinds of feminist discourse that would have appeared in popular publications and periodicals. We will also be looking at the history of feminist criticism of Woolf. We are interested not only in what feminist scholars have had to say about Woolf but about their methodologies and ways of reading Woolf. Our goal is to create a non-homogenized understanding of the ways in which feminists from the 1960s to early 2000s have understood Woolf's relationship to feminism as well as the ways in which Woolf herself understood her relationship to feminist discourse.
