Project Title: Mapping the Humanities: Intersection between History and Digital Media

Project Abstract: The aim of the project is to digitally map the letters of Fr. Pierre-Jean de Smet. He was a Jesuit missionary who lived during the 19th Century, and worked to negotiate treaties between the United States Government and the Native Americans of the Northwest Territory. De Smet was the treasurer for St. Louis University from its foundation; he also arranged for the foundation of what later became Marquette University; and he arranged for the American migration of Fr. Arnold Damen, S.J., founder of St. Ignatius College (today's Loyola University Chicago). The mapping of his letters would provide for a unique look into 19th Century life.
