My name is Lauren Rogers and I am originally from Marblehead, Massachusetts. I am currently a senior at Loyola graduating in May with a Bachelor of Arts in History and a minor in Journalism. Through Loyola’s Provost Fellowship Program, I am able to study the culture of dog fighting in Chicago. My research is extremely hands on; I attend court cases regarding animal cruelty as a court advocate on behalf of Safe Humane and actively seek to understand the sociological reasoning behind dog fighting. Concisely speaking, dog fighting is linked to opportunity, or lake thereof. It is no coincidence that many fighting rings exist on the south and west sides of the city. Chicago is a city of street fighters looking to make cash, and the sport is directly linked to race, geography and socioeconomic status as well as gang violence.
