I am from Palos Park, IL, a southwestern suburb of Chicago. I’m majoring in Biology and Spanish, with minors in Bioethics and Women’s Studies & Gender Studies. I love learning about the interacting determinants of health, especially how science and society are subject to the influences of sociocultural, political, economic, and environmental contexts. Under the mentorship of Dr. Martina Schmeling, I develop analytical methods to quantify and characterize toxic elements accumulated in the human lens, with the aim of allowing epidemiological studies to link toxic metal concentrations in optical tissue to patient vital and lifestyle parameters. Through a close relationship with Loyola University Medical Center and a shared mission of addressing health disparities in underserved populations in the Chicago area, my work in Dr. Schmeling’s laboratory has given me the opportunity to link analytical chemistry with holistic care for the community. In addition to my research, I am actively involved on campus as a member of Maroon & Gold Society, my role as a Resident Assistant, and serving on the executive board of Loyola Coalition for the Homeless. This coming Fall, I will begin graduate studies, pursuing a Master of Public Health.
