As a Social Service Intern I spend most of my time pouring through papers. I keep myself excited by thinking like a detective, as I gather information on prospective residents or current residents when creating Social Histories or File Reviews. Although searching and compiling histories seems boring, it is meaningful work in that once a history is completed on a resident (by me!) it is reviewed by Social Service Coordinators and they update the residents and their families on any changes the resident may or may not need. Apart from the paperwork, I also attend meetings of various kinds, where social workers may be discussing incoming resident placements, current resident placement changes, or meeting the resident's themselves on their yearly goals. Overall, ensuring that the needs of a differently abled population are met is a form of social justice that no amount of paperwork can disable me from advocating for!
