As the Recreation and Leisure intern at Misericordia, I work with small groups of residents assisting in arts and crafts, photography, and yoga classes.  Part of Misericordia’s mission is to “provide a community of care that maximizes potential for persons with mild to profound developmental disabilities.”  In the Rec and Leisure department, I am able to provide this care to residents of all ability levels with hands-on assistance in classes that help the residents feel more at home, make connections with other residents, maximize their own potential, and relax in a safe and fun environment. Because I interact with residents constantly during the entirety of my internship, I have the privilege of being a part of the residents’ growth, while in turn observing my own growth within my role.
