Chicago Coalition for the Homeless
The Chicago Coalition for the Homeless (CCH) is an organization dedicated to eradicating homelessness in Chicago. They “organize and advocate to prevent and end homelessness, because [they] believe housing is a human right in a just society.” This wonderful program is the only non-profit in Illinois with this mission and takes great pride in its role and voice in the community.
The Loyola Coalition for the Homeless (LCH) is Loyola’s student run organization that partners and works closely with the CCH. Former LCH President, Andrew Greenia, took an internship position with CCH, which allowed him greater insight to the program’s impact. Andrew describes CCH as an organization that “presses for access to jobs, training, and public schools. Community organizers, policy specialists, and public interest attorneys advocate with people hurt by homelessness, including mothers with children, unaccompanied youth, ex-offenders, prostitution survivors, and low-wage workers.”
Through interning with CCH, Andrew has led and been a part of community outreach and education about homelessness in local schools while facilitating discussions and promoting and organizing advocacy events. His involvement with the CCH has allowed him to build relationships with homeless individuals who have challenged him to view urban development and social change in a different way. For Andrew, “being part of a community that is committed to ending homelessness and ensuring the rights of all homeless individuals is empowering.”
“CCH gives students the opportunity to organize people around issues that affect our neighborhoods in Rogers Park and beyond. By working with students, community leaders, and neighborhood organizations, CCH provides students the chance to put ideas of social change and justice into concrete action.”
