Welcome back from Labor Day weekend! Hopefully, everyone is getting settled into their fall classes and having a good start to the semester. We have several events this week in the Department on Thursday for all students, including two events for our first seminar speaker and a pizza party for first-year and intro-level students. Please read through to learn about opportunities in law, astrophysics, graduate school, and engineering.

Kudos

• At the end of the spring semester, seven students in Loyola Physics received research fellowships – our most ever! Congratulations to Dr. Abbasi’s students: Savannah Lehrman (Provost), Gunwati Agrawal (Mulcahy), and Davide Mazzucco (Mulcahy); Dr. Tangarife’s students: Themistoklis Tzellos (Mulcahy) and Andrew Rogers (Mulcahy) and Dr. Cannon’s students: Jaiswal Rohan (Carbon) and Isabella Vari (Mulcahy)!!! • Congratulations to Mariano Gonzalez who graduated from Washington University St Louis through the Dual Degree Physics + Engineering this spring with a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering and Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering!!

Upcoming Department Events

• **Women in Physics hosting Q & A with Dr. Andeen** on Thursday, September 7^th in Cudahy 301 at 1:15 PM. Meet with Dr. Andeen from Marquette and learn about careers in astrophysics and her research. All students are invited to drop in anytime.
• **Physics Seminar** on Thursday, September 7^th in Cudahy 200 at 2:30 PM. Dr. Andeen will talk about her research with IceCube Neutrino Observatory at the South Pole and creating maps of the universe using cosmic rays. All students are invited.
• **Freshman Welcome Pizza Party** on Thursday, September 7^th in Cudahy 200 at 4:00 PM. All first-year students and students in the introductory physics courses are invited.
• Physics BBQ on Friday, September 15^th in Cudahy 305 at 4:30 PM. All students are invited.
• Visit from Columbia University Engineering on Friday, October 20^th at 12 PM in Cudahy 302. Students at any level interested in learning about Engineering at Columbia are welcome to attend and network.

Lab Opening for Physics Students

• Research Opportunity for Physics/Biophysics majors in the Loyola Environmental Sciences Department. Reuben Keller and Rachel Rogers are conducting experiments on the development of aquatic electric barriers to prevent invasive species from entering the Great Lakes. Several Physics majors have been involved in this project and they have an opening for a physics student to join their group. Loyola Events

•  Loyola Career Services has organized a virtual panel with various law school admissions staff from around the Midwest. This will be held on Monday, September 18 from 4-5pm on Zoom. The link to register for the event is on Handshake; registration is required to access the Zoom meeting. This panel will include discussions on law school admissions, standing out as a candidate, and the opportunity for Loyola students to ask questions to experienced admissions staff. Any students curious about patent law or a law career should check it out.

Other Opportunities

• American Physical Society (APS) is starting a new Physics Undergraduates Learning and Sharing Experiences (PULSE) webinar series, designed to prepare undergraduate students for pursuing or participating in academic research. APS will share new PULSE webinars throughout the 2023-24 academic year. PULSE webinars are completely free to join! The first webinar is scheduled for late September. This free webinar series is organized by the APS Student Ambassadors to demystify the research experience for undergraduate students and increase accessibility in academic research. • Loyola Physics students attended last year’s APS Conference for Undergraduate Women in Physics (CUWiP) at Argonne Lab. The Missouri University of Science and Technology (Missouri S&T) in Rolla, MO, will host CUWiP on January 19-21, 2024. CUWiP will bring together successful physicists who identify as women or gender minorities and over 2,000 undergraduate women in physics to highlight career opportunities and women’s contributions in physics. The meeting will also provide ample opportunities for interacting with fellow physicists. CUWiP sites will provide support for the lodging and meals of students who will attend the conference. • Graduating seniors interested in graduate studies (MS or PhD) in physics, biophysics or quantum information. Please check the attached flyer from Wake Forest University Department of Physics. They have a new emphasis in quantum information sciences (QIS) via quantum materials, quantum computing, and quantum optics. They are in the process of having a formal master's degree and PhD certificate program approved in QIS. Their PhD stipend has increased to $29,000 along with health insurance and a 100% waiver of tuition and mandatory fees. MS students receive a 74% tuition waiver. Third, we no longer require the GRE. Applications for Fall 2024 opened August 1 with a Jan 8th deadline; more details can be found here.

Interesting Physics Research

• Researchers show that liquid droplets in high winds move like caterpillars. Rain droplets moving across your windshield move like this. This stretching and contracting motion is due to waves produced within the droplet due to competing effects of capillary force and drag force. You can read more here.
