Dual-Degree Engineering Program
In this program a student is able to earn two baccalaureate degrees, a Bachelor of Science, Major in Physics, from Loyola University Chicago, and a Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an affiliated engineering school. Typically three years of study in the social sciences, humanities, mathematics and physical sciences at Loyola are required, followed by two years of concentrated engineering studies at the school of engineering. Students completing the Dual-Degree Program have a competitive edge over single-degree engineering graduates because of their broad training in the liberal arts, effective communication, and physics. We currently have formal affiliations with Washington University in St. Louis, Columbia University in New York City. and Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana. However, in recent past, a large number of our students have gone to University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, University of Illinois at Chicago, Northwestern University, University of Michigan, and Iowa State University to complete their engineering studies. The Pre-Engineering Program
In the Pre-Engineering Program a student takes basic math and science courses (as a physics major) at Loyola for the first two years and then transfers to an engineering school for his or her last two years.
A Dual-Degree or a Pre-engineering student may apply to any engineering school in the country. The matriculation process to different schools may be significantly different. As a general rule the transfer process will be easier to large state institutions (versus private engineering schools). As major upper level public institutions within their respective states, they have an obligation to accept qualified resident transfer students, many coming from 2-year institutions. Hence, they usually limit required engineering courses to the junior and senior years. Private institutions, on the other hand, have no such obligation and may schedule a number of required engineering course in the first two years. These courses then have to be made up by the transferring student before he/she can begin the junior program.
Graduate Engineering Program
Many engineering areas are essentially applied physics areas. Thus the student who majors in physics and completes the BS-Physics degree is essentially prepared to enter a graduate program (MS program) in such areas.
For students who elect to finish the four-year physics major program at Loyola, the department offers courses in electronics and optics which provide an ideal background for their subsequent graduate engineering studies.

For other engineering specializations than those listed above, physics majors may be accepted for graduate engineering work with some additional make-up work required. Students considering this approach to engineering should consult early with their advisor, and should contact possible graduate programs early to determine if they meet the minimum requirements for admission to the engineering schools.
