Virginia McDermott
Virginia M. McDermott, PhD, serves as the Dean of the School of Communication at Loyola University Chicago. Prior to Loyola, she served as Dean of the Nido R. Qubein School of Communication at High Point University (HPU). McDermott brings extensive experience in organizational training, particularly in fostering positive organizational environments. Her publications include articles in Communication Theory and The Journal of International and Intercultural Communication.
In addition to her leadership role as dean at HPU since 2010, Dr. McDermott previously held a faculty position in the Department of Communication and Journalism at the University of New Mexico for nearly a decade. Her research examines the impact of problematic events on relationships and conversations, communication’s role in coping mechanisms, and using communication campaigns to address social inequities.
McDermott earned her BA in communication from The College of New Jersey, followed by a MA in communication at Texas State University, and a PhD in communication from the University of Illinois.
