Emily Barman
Emily Barman, PhD, has served as the Dean of the Graduate School and the Vice Provost of Graduate Education at Loyola University Chicago since July 2020. In these roles, she is charged with fostering excellence in graduate education by pursuing a distinct vision for master’s and doctoral programs; ensuring holistic personal, social, and professional support is available to all graduate students; implementing equitable, consistent and transparent policies and procedures for all graduate students; and growing the diversity of the graduate student population in line with the mission of Loyola.
Previously, Barman served as the Associate Dean of the Graduate School at Boston University from 2017 to2020, where she oversaw the growth of master’s education and pioneered professional development support tailored for graduate students.
Barman is a Professor of Sociology at Loyola University Chicago. Her research, including two award-winning books and multiple articles published in leading journals, draws from organizational and economic sociology to engage with the topics of social impact, social entrepreneurship, and philanthropy. Emily has supervised or served on over two dozen Master’s and PhD theses committees for Sociology, Social Work, and Management graduate students.
Barman earned a BA in History and Sociology from the University of British Columbia and a MA and PhD in Sociology from the University of Chicago.
