Medical Polish/Polish American Medical Student Society (PAMSS)

Medical Polish & Polish American Medical Student Society (PAMSS)

Welcome! Witamy!

Loyola’s one-of-a-kind Medical Polish program welcomes you to partake in learning Polish! Medical Polish is a peer-led weekly language class for those learners who wish to communicate with patients in the Polish language. This program will gear students towards communication in the healthcare setting, in addition to lessons in Polish culture and tradition. We seek to enrich the culture of Stritch by providing the opportunity to learn about one of the most historic and prominent communities of Chicago.

Come join us! Dołącz do nas!

Why Medical Polish?

  • The Polish population in Illinois is large
  • There is a shortage of Polish-speaking healthcare workers
  • Helps build rapport so patients feel more comfortable
  • We can minimize miscommunication and encourage patient compliance
  • Generally becoming a more culturally-competent physician

Program Structure

  • Students will learn the fundamentals of the Polish language, medical vocabulary, and how to communicate with patients in a clinical setting
  • Lessons are peer-led - Medical Polish is made by students for students!
  • End of the year student feedback → we are continually improving!

Program Requirements

  • Attend at least 20 one-hour classes
  • Shadow a Polish-speaking physician
  • Attend a Polish physician panel
  • Complete a short, one-page reflection

Program Rewards

  • 1 week elective credit for students
  • 2 weeks elective credit for teachers
  • Most importantly, ability to speak to Poles in their own language about health concerns in a nice and friendly way (they’ll appreciate you so much for it!)

Polish American Medical Student Society

Polish American Medical Student Society (PAMSS) serves to educate about and share the Polish culture with the national medical student population. The Stritch School of Medicine’s PAMSS chapter is dedicated to exposing Stritch’s student population to Polish culture. One of the ways that Stritch’s PAMSS chapter strives to do this is by hosting Polish cultural events. Wigilia is a traditional Polish Christmas Eve dinner that PAMSS hosts for Stritch students. By following Polish tradition and literally breaking bread together and eating traditional Polish foods while being told about their meaning, Stritch students participate in one of the oldest and most meaningful Polish traditions. PAMSS also helps organize the Polish Physician Panel, which exposes students to the Polish medical community in Chicago. Attendees can learn about the power of cultural connection between physician and patient, as well as about common Polish stances on different aspects of medicine. PAMSS’s overarching goal is to provide interested medical students with a general overview of Polish background and perspective to better inform their practice as future physicians.
