Transition in the Office of the Provost

May 27, 2021

Dear Faculty and Staff,

I write to share an announcement about a change in the Office of the Provost. Norberto Grzywacz, PhD, will transition from his position as provost and chief academic officer of Loyola University Chicago to focus on his research and academic interests at the University. Effective immediately, Michael Kaufman, vice provost for academic strategy and dean of the School of Law, will serve as acting provost and chief academic officer until he transitions to his new role as dean of the School of Law at Santa Clara University this summer.

Dr. Grzywacz assumed his role on February 1, 2020, just prior to the start of the COVID-19 pandemic and its impact. We are grateful to him for being part of the team leading Loyola through these unprecedented and challenging times. We wish him well as he returns to the faculty and continues his interdisciplinary scholarship and research in the sciences and humanities.

We extend our deepest gratitude to Dean Kaufman for taking on this vital leadership role during this interim period as we develop our mid- and long-term plans for the Office of the Provost. Please be assured that we will continue to communicate plans and updates as soon as is practical.

As we work together on next steps in the Office of the Provost and look forward to beginning the implementation of our new strategic plan across the University, allow me to take this opportunity to thank our deans, faculty, and staff for their dedication and truly remarkable efforts inside and outside the classroom to serve our students and the broader Loyola community throughout the pandemic and as we prepare for a full return to campus this fall.

Sincerely,

Jo Ann Rooney, JD, LLM, EdD
