July 6, 2022: Announcing the Dean of the Quinlan School of Business

Dear Loyola Community,
We are pleased to announce that Michael Behnam, PhD, has been appointed dean of the Loyola University Chicago Quinlan School of Business, effective September 1, 2022.
A noted scholar, faculty member, and administrator, he brings extensive leadership in undergraduate business education, graduate program innovation and growth, strategy development, and international business education. He also embodies our Jesuit, Catholic values and the mission of the Quinlan School of Business through his business ethics scholarship and his work toward increased diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) among students, faculty, and staff.
Dean Behnam joins Loyola from the Sawyer Business School, Suffolk University in Boston where he served as Senior Associate Dean/Dean of Graduate Programs and Academic Affairs and a Professor of Strategy & International Business. While there, he significantly increased diversity among the faculty and led a DEI taskforce critically examining all aspects of the business school. Also under his leadership, graduate business student enrollment increased significantly, and the school developed three new graduate programs and four new fully online programs in collaboration with an online program manager. In addition, he led all internationalization activities in the business school. He forged relationships with leading universities in Europe, Asia, and Latin America and pioneered the Graduate Travel Seminar to Germany, which enabled students to experience full-day live case studies at firms like Adidas, BMW, Lufthansa, McKinsey, and Volkswagen.
Before his nearly twenty years at Suffolk University, he served as chair of the Department of International Management at EBS University in Germany. Prior to his academic career, he worked in investment banking and co-founded a specialized consulting firm.
Dean Behnam has authored three books, several book chapters, and extensive scholarly research in publications such as Academy of Management Journal (AMJ), Journal of International Management, Journal of Management Inquiry, Journal of Business Ethics, Business Ethics Quarterly, and Business and Society. He has presented his research as a keynote speaker in Europe, North America, South America, and Africa. He has applied his research consulting and providing executive education to organizations including Andersen Consulting, BMW, Bose, DG Bank, IBM, and Siemens. Dean Behnam also co-directed a research project funded by the Humboldt-Foundation on the ethical conflicts of multi-national corporations. He holds an MBA and PhD in Strategy and Ethics from the Johann Wolfgang Goethe-University in Germany and a second PhD in International Management from EBS University in Germany.

The search committee was drawn to Dean Behnam’s passion and vision for the school and its mission, coupled with his expertise in strategy and business ethics. We are also grateful to a wide range of faculty, staff/administrators, students, and alumni who provided feedback during the search process.
Until Dean Behnam’s arrival, Maciek Nowak, PhD, will continue to serve as interim dean of the Quinlan School of Business. He will then return to the Quinlan faculty and continue to serve in his new role as Senior Associate Vice President for Strategic Planning and Implementation. Dr. Nowak joined Cabinet and will serve as a liaison to Loyola’s Board of Trustees on the University Strategic Plan. We extend our community’s deepest appreciation to Interim Dean Nowak for his commitment to Loyola and the Quinlan community and for his exemplary leadership throughout this important time.
