It's a Match!
Within our Stritch School of Medicine, every March, on the third Friday at exactly 12:00 p.m. (Eastern), fourth year medical students across the country gather with their school community (and often friends and family) to open a personalized envelope. That moment is filled with great anticipation, excitement, and often, relief; the letter inside will tell students where they have “matched” and will train for the next three to seven years as they begin the next phase of their medical education.
In 2021, the main residency match was the largest in history: 38,106 total positions were offered; 36,179 were filled. Administered by the National Resident Matching Program®, this private, non-profit organization provides a mechanism to level the playing field for matching the preferences of applicants for U.S. residency positions with the preferences of residency program directors.
