ALUMNI UPDATE
T
he F. Emmett Morrissey Golf Outing has
been a summer tradition for 57 years.
This leisurely, 18-hole, scramble-format
tournament is named for a late member of the
School of Law’s Class of 1933. Morrissey was a
Circuit Court of Cook County judge for nearly 30
years and a strong supporter of the law school.
While some Loyola law graduates come to
the outing just for the camaraderie and chance to
reconnect with classmates, others have their eye
on the coveted trophy.
In advance of the 58th tournament, we
asked two foursomes, each of which has won two
tournaments in the past five years, for their takes
on the event. The reigning champions are the
foursome of Dan Blouin, Dan Dawson, Scott Lane,
and Rob Schnitz (all JD ’88), who also won the
scramble in 2007. Four young alums, Larry Acker
(JD ’06), Brian Hogan (JD ’11), Ryan Walsh (JD ’06),
and Richard Lee (JD ’06), won in 2010. That same
foursome, minus Lee (Jennifer Cook Walsh of the
Class of 2005 played in his stead), won in 2009.
Since each foursome has won twice, is there a
rivalry between you guys or is it just something
we in the alumni office have dreamed up?
Reigning champions:
The old guys (Class of
1988) will take on these
young punks anytime,
anywhere.
Challengers looking
to reclaim the title:
You’re dreaming it, but
we would be happy to
stage the drama if it
brings more people to
the outing.
What’s the secret to your foursome’s success?
Reigning champs:
Weight lifting, extreme
yoga, and ballroom
dancing lessons.
Challengers:
Our
knack for sinking
30-foot putts.
What’s the funniest thing that has happened to
your foursome at the Loyola golf outing?
Reigning champs:
We won twice.
Challengers:
We won
it...twice.
Since GPS tracking allows you to see the
scores of the other golfers, does it affect
how you play?
Reigning champs:
Absolutely. We
deliberately hold off
posting our scores until
we see what we have
to beat. Wait a minute,
I meant to say that’s
what our opponents
obviously did the two
times they “won.”
Challengers:
Yes,
especially down the
stretch—it really puts
the pressure on.
Does your foursome have any rituals
or superstitions?
Reigning champs:
One of our team
members who shall
remain nameless (but
has the initials DD)
always has to go first
to show the rest of us
what trees, ponds,
and out-of-bounds
markers to avoid.
Challengers:
Yes. Brian
Hogan’s putter is our
good-luck charm.
How do you decide who gets to drive the cart?
Reigning champs:
BAC .08—it’s the law.
Challengers:
Thunderdome.
What would you tell fellow alumni to encourage
them to participate in this year’s F. Emmett
Morrissey Golf Outing?
Reigning champs:
This
is a great event. Alums
from many different
years participate,
and it is a good way to
stay connected to
the school.
It’s always great to
see Dean Yellen and
Dean Faught, as well as
some of the celebrity
alums who attend. It
reminds us how glad
we are to be Loyola
Law alums.
Challengers:
You get to
help the law school and
have a great time doing
it. Also, it’s time for
someone to challenge
one of the two teams
that have won the last
four years.

to hear an argument made before
the justices. Due to limited space
allowed on an argument day, only
12 applicants are admitted. To make
a reservation, your paperwork and
payment for the swearing-in must
be received by Beth Kondrat at the
School of Law no later than Thursday,
November 1, 2012. Registration
