Colleen Newquist Appointed Vice President for Marketing and Communication

Colleen Newquist has been appointed vice president for Marketing and Communication. Colleen has filled this role as a consultant since July and joins the staff on January 1. 

Colleen joins Loyola after a distinguished 25-year career at the University of Chicago, where she was integral to the launch of that university's comprehensive, multi-billion-dollar campaign. As assistant vice president for alumni relations and development communications, she reorganized the 35-person team to better meet the needs of alumni, donors, and the university, and injected fresh creativity into the organization, contributing to notable increases in alumni engagement, annual giving, and the most ambitious fundraising in the university’s history.

In her previous role as assistant vice president with university communications, Colleen built UChicago Creative, an in-house creative agency that regularly competed with and rivaled outside agencies, increasing net revenue from $250,000 to $1.9 million in three years. She wrote the first identity and messaging guide for the University of Chicago, authored its strategic communications plan, and established the voice of the university through undergraduate admissions marketing communications that contributed to a 42 percent increase in applications.

Colleen began her career at the University of Chicago in 1991 as editor of the university newspaper. She joined the graduate school of business in 1998 as assistant director and alumni magazine co-editor, and in 2000 was named director of publications, where she collaborated with departments across the school to improve their marketing communications, contributing to the school’s first No. 1 ranking. She joined university communications in 2008 and became assistant vice president in 2011. 

She left the university in early 2016 to establish a communications consulting business. In addition to Loyola, her clients have included the Association of American Universities, Furman University, Ohio State University, and Harris Public Policy and the Pearson Institute for the Study and Resolution of Global Conflicts at the University of Chicago.

Colleen previously was a lifestyles editor at The Star newspaper chain in suburban Chicago, from 1987 to 1991. Also a feature writer and columnist, she received national first-place awards every year. 

Colleen possesses both the skills and character to help us move our mission forward. As a first-generation college student, Colleen doggedly pursued an education while living on her own, working multiple jobs, interrupting school for full-time work, and ultimately graduating with a bachelor’s degree in photography from Governors State University seven years after she started. She has continued her education with certificate and professional programs and is an advocate for continuing and professional studies. 

As vice president, Colleen will lead University Marketing and Communication, serving as the architect and integrator of marketing and communication efforts across the University, and counseling University leadership on communications, marketing, and media and public relations. Colleen will work closely with key University leaders including the provosts, deans, faculty, staff, fellow senior leaders, and members of the Board of Trustees.
