  • AJCU network environmental footprint – Aaron Durnbaugh, Director of Sustainability at Loyola University Chicago, has calculated the carbon footprint of the collective 28 AJCU campuses.  He will share with us how our carbon reduction efforts compare to other universities across the US, and the opportunities and challenges for reducing our collective greenhouse gas emissions.
  • Hosting future annual Climate Change Conferences - We will open discussions of whether the annual Climate Change Conference should be shared/hosted by other AJCUs in order to shine the spotlight on the good environmental sustainability work that is being done at sister AJCU schools.  Are there AJCU schools who would like to host this conference in future?  Should we keep it at Loyola University Chicago on alternate years, and host it at other schools on alternate years?  There are several models to discuss; please bring your ideas and interest.

In this plenary, we will probe a strategy for leveraging one another within the AJCU, within the international Jesuit Higher Ed network, and the Social Justice network to address climate justice.

Panelists:

  • Rev. Michael J. Garanzini, Secretary of the Society of Jesus Higher Education Directorate, Chancellor, Loyola University Chicago

The second plenary panel will include panel presentations from groups who are presently advancing the cause:

  • The International Jesuit Ecology Project – Dr. Michael Schuck will present Healing Earth; a free online Environmental Science textbook written in the Ignatian Pedagogy style, by Jesuits and Jesuit colleagues from all regions of the planet.  Healing Earth addresses six of the major threats to our planet through scientific understanding with ethical and spirituality lenses and a call to action.
  • Catholic Climate Covenant – Dan Misleh, Executive Director of the Catholic Climate Covenant, an organization that educates and equips Catholics to take action on Climate Change.  They will share many avenues of effective advocacy.
  • Ignatian Solidarity Network – Christopher Kerr, Executive Director of the ISN network, which educates and forms advocates for social (and environmental) justice, animated by the spirituality of St. Ignatius of Loyola. They will share with us the ways in which we can advocate through ISN programs.
