The Risks, Nuts and Bolts of Divestment

Divestment Workshop: The Risks, Nuts and Bolts of Divestment

Goal:
To understand the positive social and environmental impacts that divesting from fossil fuels and reinvesting in other sources can have; as well as take a closer look at the financial concerns for the institution. We will also walk participants through a step by step process of facilitating a successful divestment campaign on their own campus.

Brief Workshop Description:
This “action” workshop was open to the public, while still being designed for the AJCUs.  The workshop will include presentations from the Divest-Invest Movement (Bruce Boyd of Arabella Advisors), a case study offered by Financier George Hanley who recently shepherded Dayton University’s Board of Trustees through the divestment process, and a shared experiences from students at Seattle University and Loyola University Chicago who are going through the divestment process on their campuses.  John Sealey from the Jesuit Committee of Socially Responsible Investing (JCIR), which serves the North American Jesuit provincials in regard to socially responsible investing will share some Ignatian discernment perspectives on the fossil fuel divestment issue.
