Waste Week 2025
Waste Week Explores Options for Cutting Back on Trash
February 10 through 14 is Waste Week at Loyola, an annual event focusing on the University's efforts to reduce the amount of waste generated on campus.

Waste Week offers opportunities to learn how produce less trash by recycling, composting, repairing and reusing items, and avoiding disposable products.
Waste Week 2025 begins with a collaboration between the Office of Sustainability and the Restoration Club Restoration Club, Monday at 7 p.m. in SES 111. The meeting will invite students to bring art supplies and make Valentine's cards. The Office of Sustainability will give a brief presentation on Loyola's waste processes and the need for recycling and composting on campus. Restoration Club encourages participants to trade and share the cards they create during the event.
The week's events continue on Tuesday downtown at Arrupe College, where the Office of Sustainability will be tabling in the common area. Tabling will include a game of wastebin basketball where participants choose between the three baskets: composting, recycling, and trash. Each person gets a picture of an item of waste and attempts to select the correct waste disposal method. Participants can win a prize when they make a basket using the proper disposal can. Students on the Lake Shore campus can take their shots at the game in the Damen Atrium on Wednesday.
The Office of Sustainability will hold a movie night on Tuesday at Damen Cinema. They will screen the lovable film Boxtrolls. The movie tells a beautiful story about an orphan and creatures who collect waste products. The film will begin at 7:30 p.m. Popcorn and snacks will be available.
Also on Tuesday night, Net Impact will present a circular economy crash course at 6 p.m. in the Damen Den. This event will engage with students to help them learn about the fundamentals of a circular economy. SES faculty member Sarah Ku will speak about the intersections between the business and environmental fields.
Also on the calendar for the month, SES will host a seminar on Wednesday, February 12 from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. in room 124. SES alum Dani Abboud of the Brushwood Center will discuss the topic of queer ecology. Queer ecology examines how we understand the natural world beyond human binaries. Abboud's presentation investigates the connection between nature access and health equity as it relates to Queer and other marginalized communities and unpacks the history of how humans separated from nature.
On Friday, as the Office of Sustainability closes the week, a final activity with the Student Environmental Alliance will provide students with a creative space to mend and redo old clothes. This event at 7 p.m. in SES 110 will offer sewing kits and patches, and students will learn about how fast fashion harms the environment.
