We understand that there may be financial barriers to study abroad. To make study abroad more accessible, we maintain and are increasing an extensive list of external funding sources.


We encourage you to check out these scholarship opportunities when researching different options for your study abroad experience.

Corinne Jeannine Shillings Foundation Scholarships

  • Academic Scholarship to Study a Foreign Language

    • Eligibility
      • Must be a Silver or Gold Girl Scout.
      • Must have a 3.0 GPA in Foreign language major/minor
      • To renew: must maintain an overall B average
    • Award: $1,500 per year * Scholarship may be renewed 3 times
  • Scholarship to Study abroad

      • Must be a Silver or Gold Girl Scout
      • All majors/minors welcome

African American Linguists (AAL) Scholarship

  • Eligibility
    • Must be an African American/Black student
    • Majoring or minoring in a world language
    • Must have a 3.0 average in the major or minor
  • Award: $700 or varies

Congressional Black Caucus (CBC) Foundation Scholarship

  • Eligibility
    • Full-time undergraduates or graduate students
    • Majoring in a STEM or Health field of study
    • Minimum 2.75 GPA
    • Exhibit leadership skills and are involved in community service activities
    • Qualified applicants must be African-American or black students
    • Live or go to school in a CBC Member district
    • Demonstrate financial need
  • Award: $2,000

 CBC Spouses Education Scholarship

  • Eligibility
    • U.S. citizen or permanent U.S. resident
    • Currently/planning to be enrolled in the upcoming academic year as a full-time undergraduate or graduate student
    • Have a minimum 2.5 GPA
    • Exhibit leadership ability and participate in community service activities
    • Selected applicants will be qualified African-American or black students
  • Award: Varies ($400 - $8,200)

 CBC Spouses Heineken USA Performing Arts Scholarship

  • Eligibility
    • U.S. citizen or permanent U.S. resident
    • Currently/planning to be enrolled in the upcoming academic year as a full-time undergraduate student (students pursuing a graduate degree in the fall are ineligible)
    • Minimum 2.5 GPA
    • Pursuing a major and career in a performing art
    • Exhibit leadership ability and participate in community service activities
    • Selected applicants will be qualified African-American or black students

      • Leader on campus and in your community
      • Committed to challenging stereotypes and leading a dialogue that promotes positive social change

Hispanic Scholarship Fund

  • Eligibility
    • Must be of Hispanic Heritage
    • Minimum 2.5 GPA
    • U.S. Citizen, Permanent Legal Resident, DACA or Eligible Non-Citizen (as defined by FAFSA)
    • Complete FAFSA or state based (ex. Dream Act) financial aid application (if applicable)
  • Award: $500 - $5,000

Turkish Coalition of America (TCA) Study Abroad Scholarships for American Students of Minority and Heritage Communities

  • Eligibility
    • U.S. citizens or permanent residents
    • Of African, Armenian, Bosnian, Filipino, Hispanic/Latino, Macedonian, or Native American descent
    • Enrolled full-time and in good standing at an accredited U.S. college or university
    • Accepted into a language program or study abroad program at a university in Turkey, the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, or Bosnia and Herzegovina
    • Willing to share your experiences in Turkey with your peers and the TCA community – especially via TCA's Facebook page at www.facebook.com/TurkishCoalitionofAmerica
  • Award: Up to $2,000

Boren Scholarship

  • Eligibility
    • Must be applying to a program outside of Western Europe, Canada, Australia, or New Zealand
    • Summer Sessions are limited to Engineering and Science Majors
    • Must agree to the NSEP service agreement

    • Academic Year: Up to $20,000
    • Semester: Up to $10,000

 Explore the World Travel Scholarship

  • Eligibility
    • Be a current Pell Grant recipient, former Pell Grant recipient, or have a current income level does not exceed 300% of poverty line
    • Must live in one of the following metropolitan areas (see website for list)
    • Have a strong desire and motivation to experience other people and cultures through international travel
    • Plan on travelling abroad within the next 6 months that incorporates volunteerism or service learning
  • Award: $1,000

Fund for Education Abroad

  • Eligibility
    • U.S. citizen or permanent resident of the U.S. (as of May 2015, we welcome applications from DACA students)
    • Currently enrolled as an undergraduate at a college or university in the U.S.
    • Study abroad program must be eligible for credit at the student’s educational institution
    • Study abroad program must include at least 4 weeks (30 days) in country/countries
    • For Vietnam Applicants: Check out the Hiliary Echo Douglas Memorial Scholarship!
  • Awards
    • Academic Year: Up to $10,000
    • Semester: $5,000 (fall/spring)
    • Summer: prorated by no. of weeks, minimum $1,250

Generation Study Abroad New Zealand Excellence and Travel Awards

  • Eligibility
    • Must be a US citizen or hold US Resident status
    • Currently enrolled in at least Sophomore year at a tertiary institution in the United States of America
    • Enrolled at a New Zealand university or ITP through a Study Abroad programme
    • 18 years or above at the time of application
    • Minimum 3.0 GPA
  • Awards
    • Education New Zealand Study Abroad Travel Awards (ENZTA): $2,000 to help students fund their flight to New Zealand
    • Generation Study Abroad New Zealand Universities Excellence Awards (NZUEA): $500 for study at one of the eight New Zealand universities
    • Generation Study Abroad New Zealand Institutes of Technology and Polytechnics Excellence Awards (NZITPEA): $500 for study at participating institutes of technology and polytechnics

Gilman Scholarship

Loyola University Chicago students are eligible to receive a Gilman Incentive Grant (GIG)

  • Eligibility
    • Be a citizen of the United States
    • Must be receiving a Federal Pell Grant
    • Must be studying in host country for at least 4 consecutive weeks
    • * Deadlines for winter/spring and summer vary*
  • Award: $5,000
    • Additional $3000 for critical need language study (*Arabic, Azerbaijani, Bangla, Chinese, Hindi, Indonesian, Japanese, Korean, Persian, Punjabi, Russian, Swahili, Turkish, Urdu)
    • **Award amounts will vary depending on the length of study and student need.**
  • Eligibility
    • Must be of Hispanic Heritage
    • Minimum 2.5 GPA
    • U.S. Citizen, Permanent Legal Resident, DACA or Eligible Non-Citizen (as defined by FAFSA)

  • Eligibility
    • Full-time, Undergraduate status at a university or college based in the United States
    • Minimum 3.0 GPA
    • Willingness to share their experiences abroad with the AASAP/UK community in person at the beginning and through a reflective written piece at the end of their study abroad experience
  • Awards
    • Academic Year: £1,000
    • Semester: £500

Bridging Scholarships for Study in Japan

  • Eligibility
    • Undergraduate students majoring in any field of study are eligible and Japanese language study is not a prerequisite
    • Must be U.S. citizens
    • Must be enrolled as undergraduates in a college or university in the United States before and during the time they are studying abroad
    • Study in Japan must last for at least 3 months and must earn credit that will transfer to their home campus in the US
  • Awards
    • Academic Year: $4,000
    • Semester: $2,500

*Students studying in Japan on summer programs are not eligible to apply.*

British Transatlantic Exchange Association (BUTEX) Scholarship

  • Eligibility
    • Must be a semester or academic year program in the UK
    • Must be participating on a direct-enroll program in a UK university that is affiliated with BUTEX. This list can be found here
  • Award: £500

R. Harper Brown Scholarship for study in Scotland

  • Eligibility
    • Must study in Scotland
    • Scholastic achievement
    • Preference given to:
      • Potential for future activities that would make contribution to the CHICAGO SCOTS
      • Applicants who reside within 100 miles of the greater Chicago area 
      • Members of the CHICAGO SCOTS, their children and grandchildren
  • Award: Varies

German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD)

  • Eligibility
    • Must be planning to study in Germany for a year and engage in research or local internships
    • Must have a research proposal
  • Award: Monthly stipend of €650; Health, accident and liability insurance; Travel allowance

    • Must currently receive need-based financial aid or demonstrate a verifiable need for financial assistance to participate in the proposed study abroad program
    • Minimum 2.8 GPA
    • Must have applied or have been accepted to a study abroad based program in: Cambodia, China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Laos, Macao, Malaysia, Mongolia, Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, Vietnam
    • Programs that are language-intensive
    • Program Length: minimum of 8 weeks for a summer term, 10 weeks for a quarter term, and 12 weeks for a semester term
    • Must have little or no previous experience in the country in which he or she plans to study
    • Must submit a good service proposal that gives back and promotes study abroad in Asia back on campus.

The French Embassy Benjamin Franklin - Generation Study Abroad Scholarship

  • Eligibility
    • U.S. citizen or permanent U.S. resident enrolled at an American University
    • Candidates must enrolled in an undergraduate degree program
    • Candidates must plan to do their study abroad experience within a French institution
  • Award: $2,500

 Japan-American Society (JASWDC) Tanaka & Green Scholarship

  •  Eligibility
    • Must be a US citizen or hold US Resident status
    • Must be enrolled full time in an undergraduate or graduate school in the United States
    • Must give proof of acceptance at a college or university in Japan as a full time foreign exchange student for either one semester or one academic year
    • Must give proof that the program in Japan is an approved student exchange program of the applicant's home college or university in the US
    • Must intend to return to the college or university in the United States
    • May be majors in any subject, but must demonstrate that they have taken or plan to take academic courses related to Japan, whether in the US or at the Japan college or university
