Course Title: Educational Leadership in Academic Medicine

Prerequisite: Available to third and fourth year students.
Special Note:  Part-time elective.
Description:

This course provides a theoretical foundation and practical application of educational leadership through leading educational sessions with medical students, for example in the Step 1 Stritch board prep class. Although the course is designed to be a two week elective, scheduling will be flexible so the course can be completed during clerkships without undue hardship.

Students will:
• Develop an educational leadership learning plan in SMART goal format.
• Complete a leadership self-assessment
• Demonstrate familiarity with basic applications of learning sciences in small group settings.
• Assume the role of educator/leader of their group for the purposes of scheduling, planning, and delivering instruction for a minimum of 6 sessions.
• Use informal and formal assessments to provide feedback to members of their group.
• Complete tracking forms on attendance at sessions.

Method of Evaluation:

The course will be graded pass/fail only.

Requirements:
• Three didactic sessions with course director (30%)
• Learning Plan (10%)
• Completion of a minimum of 6 learning sessions (30%)
• Leadership self -assessment assignment (10%)
• Brief patient focused educational intervention (10%)
• Written reflection and evaluation of learning plan (10%)
