4. Narrative Comment
Many electives outside the Department of Family Medicine are listed because family medicine draws on many if not most disciplines. The student should choose electives to build on skills already acquired or learn new skills not yet acquired but needed for family practice. The student may also consider an externship in family practice at a location similar to one in which he or she eventually hopes to train and/or practice. For example, a student interested in working in a rural area may want to do a rotation in a rural family practice residency program or Indian Health Service clinic. Away rotations in Family Medicine are not expected, but can be a great way to get to know a program you are really interested in for residency.
