There are a variety of electives that are helpful to a person going into dermatology, and so the schedule can be flexible and tailored to a candidate's needs. Electives should be selected to supplement future education, and with an eye toward career goals. So, the fourth year is a good opportunity for exposure to those areas that will not be addressed in the future. Consideration should also be given to the type of internship that will be completed. Some surgical specialties that may be useful include Ophthalmology, ENT, Plastic Surgery, and Peripheral Vascular. A strong basic background in internal medicine is essential for general Dermatology, and so most medical subspecialties, especially Rheumatology, will be helpful. Individuals contemplating a career in pediatric Dermatology may also want to consider pediatric subspecialties.
