| Description: |
Dedicated experience as a senior clerkship student on the Minimally Invasive/Bariatric Surgery Service. This elective will enhance the knowledge, skills, and attitudes of those student desiring a more immersive experience in:
The student will follow patients longitudinally through clinic or hospital presentation, surgery, and post-surgical follow-up. The student will be expected to function at a sub-internship level, caring for patients, staffing consults, and participating in surgeries. They will also be expected to teach clerkship surgical students’ basic surgical knowledge, skills, and attitudes as a senior student. |
| Method of Evaluation: |
Students will be evaluated on the basis of each of five core objective areas. By the end of the rotation student should be able to care for basic and complex surgical patients including calling consults, minor procedures, and inpatient collaboration with other teams. The student will give an oral presentation upon a topic of his/her choice facilitated by one of the service faculty to residents, students, and attendings on the service. An oral exam will be given at the conclusion of the rotation to assess medical knowledge gained on the rotation. A minimum passing of two of the tree scenarios is required for the exam. Students may retake the exam until a passing score is achieved. The course director will determine the final grade. The student will meet with the service lead prior, mid rotation, and post rotation for expectation setting and feedback. The post rotation debrief will also include a verbal rotation evaluation for the service to improve the teaching and organization of the service to better serve the student. |
