| Description: | The Trauma/Critical Care elective will give the medical student firsthand experience in the evaluation and resuscitation of the multiply-injured patient and in the management of the Intensive Care patient. Goals of the service are teaching the correct evaluation of the trauma patient, the setting of priorities in management, and the indications for the various diagnostic tests. Indications for thoracic aortography, respiratory support and peritoneal lavage are discussed. Evaluation and management of the hemodynamically unstable ICU patient and post-operative care are emphasized. The treatment for sepsis and respiratory insufficiency are covered in detail. |
| Method of Evaluation: | Students will be assessed on their clinical performance as judged by the Director of the Service. Performance on individual presentation given at the end of the rotation will also be included in the student's overall evaluation. |
