Prerequisite: Completion of Medicine and Surgery clerkships.
Special Note:  
Description: The elective is designed to expand the student's knowledge and experience in general surgery and surgical oncology in a university hospital setting. The student will function as a subintern with direct patient care responsibilities both on the floor and in the operating room. He/she will be under supervision of the chief surgical resident on the service but will participate in daily rounds, operations, Tumor Board, Mortality and Morbidity Conference, Medical/Surgical GI Conference, and on Friday-morning Meet the Professor Rounds. General Surgical Service I has a variety of cases that are mainly oncologic and colorectal, and the routine general surgical problems of the gallbladder, hernias, etc. It is anticipated that by the end of the rotation, the student and supervisors will have a good idea of the student's suitability for becoming a surgeon.
Method of Evaluation: Evaluation is based on the combined assessments of the faculty and residents who participated during the clerkship experience.
