Prerequisite: YES - Fourth Year Standing. Open to SSOM students only.
Special Note: Students must meet with and obtain course director's consent prior to registering.
Description:

The goals of this elective relate to both vascular and interventional radiology as utilized in patient management and treatment. The student will actively participate in the daily pre-procedural evaluation of patients, the procedures, and post-procedural patient care. This participation will consist of chart reviews, previews of all pertinent imaging procedures and physical presence during the performance of procedures. Additionally, the student will be directed to read and report on selected sections of textbooks and journal articles related to the specific procedures and pathology encountered. Emphasis will be placed on integrating gross anatomy with diagnostic imaging related to the patients who are examined.

The goals for the student in this elective are to:

1. Know and understand the basic indications for diagnostic vascular imaging in the evaluation of common diseases of the thorax, abdomen, pelvis, and extremities.

2. Learn the basic indications for, methodology of, and complications associated with commonly performed interventional radiology procedures.

3. Understand, through reading literature, daily teaching, and direct experience, the broad goals of vascular and interventional radiology.

4. Learn how various diagnostic imaging modalities can be used to evaluate pathology and guide patient care.

Method of Evaluation: The student will be evaluated based on a combination of factors including: understanding of basic interventional radiology techniques and reading assignments, daily service participation and rotation presentation.
