Prerequisite: Completion of Pediatrics clerkship.
Special Note: All interested students are required to write a letter of intent, stating their interest in the elective (and their interest in Loyola, for visiting students). This will be reviewed by the Elective Director. After review of letter by the Elective Director, students will be notified of approval/denial of rotation. Location of rotation: LUMC children's hospital for daily rounds. OBT Loyola Subspecialty Clinic for ID Clinic once a week every Thursday AM.
Description: The student will see pediatric patients needing infectious disease consultation (usually about 25 per month) and will write the initial and daily notes. He/she will attend all scheduled lectures and activities of the Department of Pediatrics. The student will receive some instruction in microbiology from the clinical microbiology laboratory. The student will attend weekly pediatric infectious disease clinic. He/she will attend the Joint Pediatric/Infectious Disease conference twice a month, and present patients of interest to this group. Topics which will be covered in a formal and informal manner include: antibiotics, neonatal infections, tuberculosis, pediatrics AIDS, infections in immunocomprised hosts, nosocomial infections, Kawasaki Disease, osteomyelitis and septic arthritis, meningitis and encephalitis, fever of unknown origin, and clinical microbiology.
Method of Evaluation: Assessment of participation in daily activities of section: involvement in inpatient and outpatient activities, interaction/communication with patients and managing service, clarity of presentations and progress notes, level of interest, initiative and depth of knowledge.
