Prerequisite: Completion of Medicine and Pediatrics clerkships.
Special Note: All interested students are required to write a letter of intent, stating their interest in the elective (and their interest in Loyola, for visiting students). This will be reviewed by the Elective Director. After review of letter by the Elective Director, students will be notified of approval/denial of rotation. Description:

This elective involves dealing with inpatient and outpatient Endocrinology, Metabolism and Nutrition. Students will be exposed to and begin to manage the various problems and complications of Insulin Dependent Diabetes Mellitus (IDDM). The student will encounter a wide range of endocrine disorders, including thyroid disease, growth disorders and adrenal pathophysiology.

They will be involved in the theory and management of fluid and electrolyte disorders, including parental nutrition. Certain rare metabolic disorders will be encountered and their management discussed. Students should contact the course supervisor for specific responsibilities, consultation and rounds schedule.

Method of Evaluation: Students' grades will be based on their presentations, consultation (in-depth study of individual patient) and response on rounds.
