Anatomic & Clinical Pathology (Online) Virtual Elective

Virtual/Online Elective 

Goal: This course provides an opportunity for students to gain a deeper understanding of the practice of pathology and laboratory medicine by active involvement in elements of both anatomic and clinical pathology.

Background: Informing medical students of the structure and function of pathology and laboratory medicine (anatomic and clinical pathology practice) will improve student knowledge of the pathophysiology of disease and laboratory function. This will lead to improved understanding of laboratory testing, diagnosis and test utilization.

Description: With a team of UMEDs pathology educators, Dr. Kamran Mirza has founded pathelective.com which houses web-based training modules for both anatomic and clinical pathology education. At the time of the implementation of this elective most modules will be under construction; however, given the urgency of need for virtual electives (due to the COVID-19 pandemic) most modules will become live early during the course of the elective.

 During this elective students will

• View and engage with the following interactive modules on pathelective.com (with numerous submodules):

• Introduction to Pathology (General Pathology Overview)

• Gross Pathology

• Dermatopathology

• Blood Bank and Transufusion Medicine

• Hematology

• Hematopathology

• GI Pathology

• GYN pathology

• GU Pathology

• Cytopathology

• There will be daily zoom meetings (mandatory attendance) with Dr. Mirza for 15 minutes in which he will outline the material to be covered for that day

• Each module will have a pre- and post quiz and also an MCQ-based test

• Students will meet several pathology faculty members and housestaff in weekly "interactive" zoom sessions reviewing pathology slides

• Students will be expected to deliver a 15-20 minute pathology talk at the end of their rotation

• A final “comprehensive” exam will be MCQ based and include writing a patients pathology report.

Objectives
After completing this elective students will be able to:
Medical Knowledge
- Identify anatomic and clinical pathology as separate parts of pathology practice
- Identify normal histology (for chosen submodules)
- List the common pathology abnormalities in every submodule

Interpersonal and Communication Skills
- Develop a comprehensive pathology report that relays pertinent information to patient and PCP
- Participate in daily zoom meetings with virtual interactions successfully

Patient Care

- Facilitate a patient-centered approach when reviewing patient matieral (gross organs and histology slides)

Interprofessional Collaboration

- Learn ways to strengthen the patient-provider relationship and coordinate care with other specialists (including histotechnologists, medical laboratory scientists and pathologists’ assistants)

- Use a team-based approach for reaching a pathologic diagnosis

The course will be graded according to the following scale:

 Requirements:

Students must complete all of the following to achieve a Passing grade for the elective:

a) Meet with the course director (virtually) at the start of the elective to discuss the expectations

b) Meet with the course director daily (or as outlined by the course director) regarding dail assignments

c) Submit a certificate of completion for at least 10 pathology modules

d) Write a detailed pathology report for an unknown slide
