Prerequisite: YES - Completion of Internal Medicine and Surgery clerkships.
Special Note: Open to SSOM students only.
Description:

On this rotation the student will be exposed to the assessment and management of adults with physical disabilities in both the inpatient and outpatient settings. The student will participate in the multidisciplinary patient evaluation conference, and will learn the role of each of the treatment team members. This rotation will allow the student the opportunity to be part of special programs such as spinal cord injury, amputations and brain dysfunction. Students will also learn the role of diagnostic testing, such as urodynamics and electromyography. The student will observe therapies in various disciplines (Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Speech Therapy, etc.) The student will attend Journal Club, Case Discussion and other resident education activities. The student will have the opportunity to observe rehabilitation related research currently in progress.

At the end of this rotation, the student will be expected to have a good understanding of the role of the physiatrist in the assessment and management of patients with physical disabilities, and of the multidisciplinary team approach.

Method of Evaluation: The attending physician will evaluate the student and will request input from the resident physician on the rotation. This evaluation will be based on the ability of the student to assimilate new information, acquire new diagnosis and assessment skills, and utilize these skills in the assessment of patients with physical disabilities.
