Course Title: Cerebrovascular Disease
No. of Students: 1
Site: LUMC
Supervisor: Jose Biller, M.D.
Duration: 4.0 weeks
Periods Offered: Year round
Prerequisite: Completion of Neurology Clerkship.

The course will consist of clinics, time in the angiography and vascular surgery labs, formal tutorials by the Stroke Physician, conferences, and assigned readings from critical papers and texts in cerebrovascular disease. The main ‘course text’ (to be loaned to the student) will be the "Primer for Cerebrovascular Disease," supplemented by other materials as appropriate. The student will have an opportunity to see patients with problems such as stroke in pregnancy, stroke and cardiac disease (i.e. patent foramen ovale), stroke and autoimmune or hypercoaguable states, etc. as well as outpatient evaluation of more common stroke subtypes.

Objectives: Provide the student an exposure to diagnosis and evaluation of complex CVD cases.

Expose the student to testing modalities in CVD with a focus on ultrasound and angiography (CT and MRI are modalities typically seen in the basic rotation) and the uses and limits of diagnostic imaging in CVD.

Provide a knowledge base regarding CVD through structured readings and one-on-one ‘seminars.’

Method of Evaluation: Student Summative Evaluation (50%); Paper and presentation on a related topic (30%); 20 question multiple choice exam (20%)
