Prerequisite: Completion of Medicine or Surgery Clerkship.
Special Note:

*Available to M3 students for four-week rotation only. Available to M4 students for two- or four-week rotation.

On the first day of the rotation, report at 8:30 AM to Blg. 102, 7th floor, to be directed to the Renal Consult Fellow.

Student reports at 8:00 a.m. on Mondays; 8:30 a.m. on all other days.

There are lectures for residents and students held on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 8:00am in the Renal Conference Room at Loyola. There is a different lecture by a different Renal attending each time. Students enrolled in the Nephrology elective at both Loyola and Hines are encouraged to attend.

Elective is Monday-Friday.

Description: This elective provides a comprehensive experience on the Nephrology Consultation Service. Students will be responsible for the consultation effort and daily follow-up of patients with acute and chronic renal disease, hypertension, and fluid-electrolyte abnormalities. The student's evaluation of patients and recommendations for treatment will be reviewed in-depth by a senior staff member in Nephrology. Indications and complications of dialysis techniques, transplantation and renal biopsy will be reviewed. While the student is not primarily responsible for floor service, he/she will be expected to participate in all teaching activities, including rounds and conferences.
Method of Evaluation:

Evaluation of the student's performance will be based on participation in rounds, oral case presentations, consultation work-ups, and the presentations at the section's weekly Grand Rounds. 

This course is graded Honors/High Pass/Pass/Fail.
