Course Title: Hematology Consults

Prerequisite: Completion of Medicine or Surgery Clerkship. Restricted to SSOM students.
Special Note:

*Available to M3 students for four-week rotation only. Available to M4 students for two- or four-week rotation.

On the first day of the rotation, contact the fellow or Anne Rocconi (x73215).

Description: The students are a part of the Hematology Consult Service during this elective and have specific jobs to perform. They see new consults and present the cases to the team for evaluation and management. They make rounds on the hospitalized patients on a daily basis and present these to the attending hematologist. They attend outpatient Hematology clinic once or twice a week. They may have the opportunity to help perform a bone marrow biopsy. They read the bone marrows with the attending hematologist. The students may be asked to review particular topics and present the information to the group. The students attend the "Teaching Rounds," which are mandatory for the residents. During these teaching rounds, a given topic is discussed in depth. Students may wish to learn basic coagulation procedures in the laboratory during this rotation.
Method of Evaluation:

Written evaluation based on: a. Evaluation of consultations. b. Attendance at and participation in conferences and clinics. c. Case presentations.

This course is graded Honors/High Pass/Pass/Fail.
