Special Note:

This course is outside the required curriculum, and no student may use this course to leave from, or reduce, the required time of any other course.

Meeting Dates in 2024 are on Wednesday evenings: 

February 28 (then off March 6 for mid-semester break)

Description:

"Year after year in medical schools across the country, the first-year class enters filled with a sense of privilege and excitement about becoming doctors. Four years later, this excitement has given way to cynicism and numbness. By graduation, students seem to have learned what they have come to do but forgotten why they have come."  Dr. Rachel Naomi Ramen 

Healer’s Art Reflections continues and expands upon the vital process begun in Healer’s Art: strengthening our understanding of, and connection with, who we are, and why we came to medicine.

This clinical companion course focuses on new ways of understanding the human dimension of medical care. It is designed to illuminate our daily challenges, with discussions that will elevate our common humanity. Students will leave the sessions better prepared to master their own path in a clinical environment.

Like Healer’s Art, we will use discovery model learning. Using perspectives from complexity theory, human systems dynamics, cultural anthropology, spirituality, neurobiology, and social & emotional intelligence, we will explore human aspects of medicine not traditionally discussed in medical training. 

Brief introductory presentations will serve as the catalyst for small group reflection, allowing for creative thinking and authentic connections. Topics include inquiry, social roles and social control, fostering connection, setting intention, intractable problems in complex systems, mindsight & neuroscience, narrative, and courage.

Sessions will be supported by clinical time utilizing the Hines VA ER.

Method of Evaluation:

With every meeting, students will have the opportunity to share and reflect upon their own personal experiences and those of their colleagues. There is no textbook for the course. 

Grades are administered on a Pass/Fail basis and are based on attendance and participation.

Attendance at ALL sessions is mandatory. Absence from a session will be handled at the discretion of the course director.  Students with multiple absences may be asked to withdraw from the course
