Students may start making request in JANUARY for the upcoming academic year. The Underserved Medicine elective has Inpatient opportunities. Dr. Floyd prefers that the students contact Margaret Stefani Higgins for availability. Time out of clinic for residency interviewing may not exceed 4 days and must be approved in advance. |
| Description: |
This is a shift rotation with 4 Day Teams and 1 Night Team. Day Teams cover 6 am - 6 pm and Night Teams cover 6 pm - 6 am. The average census per Team is 8-12 patients (cap of 14). Students are assigned 2-3 patietns at a time that they follow from admission to discharge. Students present their patients on daily attending, Sign out and Multipdisciplinary rounds, they write H&Ps and daily progress notes on their patients. All notes are reviewd and addended by the senior resident and/or the Attending Physician. Students will attend all the didactic sessions of the inpatient service. Students should not work more than 12 hours a day. Schedules may vary but will include a Golden Weekend Off and a weekend day off each of the other three weeks.

| Method of Evaluation: | Satisfactory completion of the elective will depend on meeting the following conditions: 1. A satisfactory evaluation from the site instructor, using competency related goals and objectives. The site instructor will complete an evaluation based on knowledge, attitude, and competence. 2. A patient/clinical experience log. This can be done as a daily log or clinical diary. 3. Presentation based on required readings as described in "Student Projects." 4. Presentation of a selected patient as described in "Student Projects." 5. Completion of a minimum of 4 hours of voluntary community service. |
