Description:

This elective involves a comprehensive overview of sports medicine under the direct supervision of one or more family medicine physicians in an outpatient setting. The student will evaluate patients with a wide variety of acute and chronic medical issues and be prepared to diagnose and manage common sports related issues in the family medicine setting. The course consists of a combination of a Sports Injury Clinic and traditional family medicine, as well as training room clinics at local area schools. Additional time may be available at various rehabilitation centers and orthopedic offices in the area.

SITE: Resurrection Hospital, 7447 W. Talcott, Chicago, IL. 25 Minute drive from LUMC 
Program: 6,6,6; Faculty: 4FT, 10PT; Areas of Interest: Sports Medicine, Geriatrics, flexible sigmoidoscopy, and pediatrics.

Method of Evaluation: Satisfactory completion of the elective will depend on meeting these conditions: 
1. A satisfactory evaluation from the site instructor, using competency related goals and objectives. The site instructor will complete an evaluation based on knowledge, attitude, and competence. 
2. A patient/clinical experience log. This can be done as a daily log or clinical diary. 
3. A one page double-spaced summary describing the elective experience. 
4. Pass a 10-question final exam.
