Description: |
This elective will focus on enhancing medical student confidence and competency in interacting with individuals with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities (IDD) to improve healthcare outcomes for this population. People with IDD comprise one of the most neglected groups in healthcare, and they face multiple challenges when seeking medical services, preventive health care, and ongoing medical management. Although they have a lower life expectancy and a higher prevalence of chronic medical conditions, their health needs are oftentimes unmet due to insufficient resources, support, and healthcare provider training. As part of this elective, you will have the unique opportunity to learn from experts in the field of disabilities, physicians who work with patients with IDD, and individuals with IDD who live in the surrounding community. You will also take part in student-led small groups to allow for further discussion and reflection with your peers. You will then apply what you learned throughout the elective and take part in a simulated clinical experience where you will interview a person with IDD in the Clinical Skills Center.
|
Method of Evaluation: |
The course consists of five 1-week blocks in addition to the Clinical Skills Experience. The Pre-Course Survey and all requirements listed prior to the Clinical Skills Experience must be met satisfactorily for students to participate in the experience. Students will be evaluated using the following components on a complete/incomplete basis:
1. Pre-Course Survey Completion.
2. Weekly Blocks - a) Attendance during Speaker Presentation(s); b) Attendance & Participation during Small Group Sessions (includes completion/discussion of Pre-Session Assignments); c) Completion of Weekly Reflection Journal Entry. 3. Completion of Clinical Skills Experience - a) Includes Attendance & Participation during Small Group Debriefing Session. 4. Completion of Final Reflection Paper. 5. Post-Course Survey Completion. Missing assignments will be handled on a case-by-cases basis. Failure to complete all assignments in time will result in an inability to accommodate students for the Clinical Skills Experience and a failing grade for the elective course. See Attendance & Make-Up Policy in syllabus for guidelines regarding session absences. The Clinical Skills Experience, along with the Final Reflection Paper and Post-Coruse Survey, must also be completed and submitted as applicable in order to pass this course and receive one week of elective credit. |
