Community and Global Health Honors Program
The Community and Global Health (CGH) Honors Program is a four-year curricular foundation for service learning at Stritch, supporting field experience and scholarly investigation for students who aspire to improve the health of vulnerable populations locally, nationally, and globally.
Timeline and Curriculum
Physicians-in-training interested in the Honors Program apply in December of M1 year and those who are accepted begin the program in late January of M1 year.
The Program builds upon existing lectures in the general curriculum, covering essential topics through seminars, discussion sessions, and additional online modules. Learning activities and events may vary from year to year but the progra,'s progression is as follows:
- Year 1: Introduction to Global Health Challenges;
- Year 2: Case Studies in Global Health Challenges;
- Year 3: Integration of Clinical Experience and Global Health;
- Year 4: Culmination of Field Experience and Scholarly Project.
Requirements
Graduating with CGH Honors requires completion of the following components by April of M4 year:
- 16 Seminar Series events;
- 150 hours of Field Experience;
- Scholarly or Quality Improvement Project;
- 4+ weeks of eligible electives.
Required Field Experience hours are earned through local and/or international community service proposed by the physician-in-training and approved by the CCGH, and participation in an Ignatian Service Immersion (ISI) trip may count toward the required hours.
The Scholarly Project may be an original scholarly project or a secondary data analysis that focuses on an underserved population locally or globally and requires a Faculty Mentor. Students completing a Scholarly Project are also required to take CCGH-409 in M4 year.
Inspired to improve the programs or services of local community organizations where they undertake field experience, students may opt instead to complete a Quality Improvement Project with their organizations. Students completing such projects are required to take CCGH or other approved electives during M4 year.
